Some might say truth is stranger than fiction — until you watch all 10 Thanksgiving episodes of “Friends” back to back. In that case, Hollywood wins … In honor of the upcoming holiday, we compared our Thanksgiving logging data with all 10 Thanksgiving episodes on “Friends.” For Monica, Phoebe, Rachel, Ross, Chandler and Joey, no two “Friendsgivings” were alike — and no food, from Funyuns to a beef-and-custard trifle, was too bizarre.
For all the “Friends” fans out there, we’ve culled 2016 data from our Under Armour Connected Fitness users to see how our Thanksgivings match up with the gang’s. It turns out, we’re more traditional in our Thanksgiving feasts — and that might be a good thing.
SEASON 1: THE ONE WHERE UNDERDOG GETS AWAY
Monica makes three kinds of potatoes: tots for Joey, mashed with lumps for Ross and whipped with peas and onions for Phoebe. Unfortunately, no one gets to enjoy Monica’s concoctions because they get locked out watching the Underdog balloon get away during the Macy’s parade. Instead, they end up eating grilled cheese (with dark and light cheese), Funyuns and wine.
SEASON 2: THE ONE WITH THE LIST
Ross has to choose between his longtime crush, Rachel, and fellow paleontologist, Julie. And what better process of elimination than a pro/con list? Elsewhere, Monica is interviewing for a job and creates Thanksgiving-themed recipes with mockolate (a synthetic chocolate substitute … yum?): pumpkin pie with mockolate cookie-crumb crust, mockolate cranberry cake and mockolate chip cookies. According to Phoebe: “This is what evil must taste like.”
SEASON 3: THE ONE WITH THE FOOTBALL
The gang plays a 28-minute game of football and competes for the Geller Cup (a troll doll). The game ends with Ross and Monica refusing to admit defeat to each other, while the gang goes back to the apartment to eat Thanksgiving dinner: Turkey (the leg for Joey), stuffing, yams with marshmallows, cranberry sauce and mashed potatoes, which Chandler ate out of the serving bowl.
SEASON 4: THE ONE WITH CHANDLER IN A BOX
Friendships are tested: Joey and Chandler are at a crossroads — and as a way to “think about what he did,” Chandler goes into a box.
The meaning of the box:
- Gives Chandler the time to think about what he did
- Proves how much he cares about his friendship with Joey
- It hurts
Monica gets ice in her eye and visits the optometrist, Dr. Burke. After picking up the doctor as a new dinner guest, the group sits down for Thanksgiving dinner: yams, mashed potatoes, green beans, pumpkin pie and turkey (except for Chandler, of course).
SEASON 5: THE ONE WITH ALL THE THANKSGIVINGS
The group is stuffed from their Thanksgiving meal, and they reminisce about their worst Thanksgivings. A few stories later, Monica apologizes to Chandler with a turkey-on-the-head, complete with sunglasses and a fez.
SEASON 6: THE ONE WHERE ROSS GOT HIGH
Ross and Monica’s parents join the group for Thanksgiving and Rachel helps with the Thanksgiving dessert by meticulously preparing a traditional English trifle: a layer of ladyfingers, jam, custard, raspberries, more ladyfingers, beef sautéed with peas and onions, more custard, bananas and a topping of whipped cream.
While Ross thought it tasted like feet, Joey was digging it … “What’s not to like? Custard? Good. Jam? Good. Meat? Goooood.”
SEASON 7: THE ONE WHERE CHANDLER DOESN’T LIKE DOGS
Chandler introduces a game where you have to name as many states as you can in six minutes. Ross is confident he’ll be able to name all the states before dinner, or else, no dinner for him. Meanwhile, the world is also introduced to the cutest dog ever — Clunkers.
The group (sans Ross) get their Thanksgiving dinner: individual sweet potato-stuffed pumpkins for each person, stuffing, green beans and turkey.
SEASON 8: THE ONE WITH THE RUMOR
Monica doesn’t want to make a turkey because half of the group won’t be eating it, but Joey convinces her to make it after promising to eat all of it. A former high school classmate (and co-president of the “I hate Rachel Green” club) joins the group for their Thanksgiving meal: yams, a 19-pound turkey for Joey, chicken for Chandler, cranberry sauce, pumpkin pie and pecan pie.
SEASON 9: THE ONE WITH RACHEL’S OTHER SISTER
Monica wants to save their wedding china for an important occasion (like when the Queen of England comes over), but Chandler thinks Thanksgiving dinner is a good time to use it. The group is joined by Rachel’s sister, Amy, and they all eat turkey, but very cautiously due to Monica’s plate issues.
SEASON 10: THE ONE WITH THE LATE THANKSGIVING
Monica is guilted into hosting Thanksgiving again, but the whole gang shows up to dinner 45 minutes late. On top of that, Rachel and Phoebe forget to pick up chocolate pies from the bakery off of Bleecker Street. The day turns around when they get the happy news that Monica and Chandler are about to become parents!
